Homeless people are homeless because they screwed up their lives. They can WALK to the homeless shelter and get food, clothes, a warm bed, and even [shocker] A JOB!
Sad thing is, most of them prefer to walk the streets and beg for money for more booze.

I think the government should spend some money to help the homeless people and even improve the living conditions of the homeless shelters. Build at least some nice shelters where people don't have to all lump together at one place that is not clean either...

Amazing as it may sound:
1. Some homeless people choose to appear that way.
2. Some home less people have lots of money, but are mentally disturbed. And just wonder around.
3.Some homeless people, are just burnt out on the corp. world and society. and just choose that life.
4. Some homeless people do have jobs.
5. Some homeless do not have family. And they just fell left out or alone.
6. Some homeless choose that life to avoid child support, tax's, etc...
7. Some homeless became that way after a major divorce.
8. Most homeless appear to be happy.
9. Most homeless are runaways.
A lot of us that are not homeless are just a paycheck away.
Howard Hughes was homeless at one time.

Prisons are a more healthy place than homeless have, but less freedom. Most ex prisoners want freedom that I know of even in a homeless shelter.

OK Jenny - let's posit this. YOU suddenly find yourself broke- shal we put YOU in prison, restrict all your freedoms, just because you have no money?
I don't think you realize how much it costs to keep people in prison; it's why a lot of minor crimes are put on probabtion instead of spending time in jail. Last numbers I saw, it cost almost $40k to keep someone in jail, provide all those things for them.
Some people CHOOSE to be homeless - I've met a couple. They always manage to eat, get clean, find somewhere to sleep and they enjoy the freedom that being homeless gives them.
Taking care of them starts one person at a time - what are YOU doing to help them out besides posting in Yahoo? Try donating money, food, clothing or time - then come back and ask that question.

Unfortunately you are probably correct. People in prison are treated far better than those who are homeless.
The real problem with homeless people lies in our dysfunctional (nonfunctional may be more appropriate) healthcare system. (no i did not just see sicko)
A large majority of homeless people have a.)alcohol and/or drug problems or b.)mental illness
If we had a healthcare system that worked properly and took mental illness and addiction as seriously as they do other life threatening diseases we would no longer have such a large ammount of homeless people with no food/shelter/medical care.

I let a couple of borderline homeless people say with me before and they both stole from me. Why didn't I learn after the first one? With some people you give them a finger and they take an arm. They also both had this attitude like if I got tired of their mooching, they'd say I was cheap and selfish, after I had let them stay with me for a couple of months.
As for the numerous homeless walking city streets, I don't think enough people really empathize with them to do something to solve the problem.
Maybe they could do jury duty???
Nah, many homeless people have psych. problems and
there's nobody to pay their bills. Would you like to volunteer?

Fair question I suppose. Since I assume that you are a part of the "we" that you speak of, and you seem to feel so strongly about this, I have a suggestion. You build a house for a homeless person, and furnish it, put clothes in the closets, and fill the pantry with food.......and then I will do the same.

Its sad, but the majority of American's are one paycheck away from being homeless. Most of us are borderline homeless! I don't think prison is the answer. We have a government that is selling out the American people. Democracy works, so does capitalism, buit mankind is evil and that includes our leaders!
All we can do is pray, and help out when we can.
God Bless

Good idea. Tell me when you buils them so I can invest. We'll make millions, just like the other prisons. Everybody needs more of them. And the more laws we can pass and then get dumb kids to break them, the more money we'll make and the more taxes we can pass to pay for it all. It's only like $30,000 or more per person per year to house them.
