if so, then when do they open them?

No they do not. Here is a good picture of a Leopard Gecko hatching from my website. As you can see, she has her eyes open while the rest of her body is in the egg. http://www.mkgeckos.com/images/hatchlings/images/thumper/hatchling2/pic1.jpg

when baby geckos first hatch, they have to be able to see right away so that they can easily avoid predators. geckos, like many other reptiles, are not known to look after their young once hatched. because of this, if the geckos were hatched with their eyes closed, the would meet a most certain death in the wild.

Nope, they are born open and can see right away. They are on their own and must be able to hunt as soon as possible.
