I had some water coming into my basement a few years back, so I had a sump pump installed. It is a submersible pump, so there is always a bit of standing water that stays in the bottom of the crock (18" across, 18" deep). Over time I get quite a bit of larvae and what appear to be medium-size black flies that build up in the room where the pump is located. I can go through the room every few months with a can of "flying insect" pesticide spray, which seems to help, but would like to implement a more comprehensive solution, if possible. I talked to some local hardware store employees, who only suggested covering the hole of the crock with screening to keep the bugs in the crock. Is there no way to treat the standing water with something that would prevent the larvae from forming? Thanks!

At the garden center you can find large tablets, maybe about 3 inches across, that will keep mosquitoes out of fountains, bird baths, or any standing water. Perhaps that would work as well on your flies. I really don't know, but seems worth a try.
