because we, the people, have been allowing them to do so. We need to stop for a couple of years and take care of our own. If we don't help others though, communist countries and others for which the U.S. views as unfriendly will move in and take our place. In the world today I am not sure that it matters. The world is so connected with the innovation of computers and the fact that close to a billion people now have computers. We are kind of between a rock and a hard place if you know what I mean.

Our country seems to focus on a foreign policy that benefits the interests of private business, primarily big oil and the military/industrial complex, at the expense of what is good for our citizens and in the best interest of citizens of other countries. If Nation C elected a president who acted in the best interests of his country but not support our trade policies we would find a way to undermine that elected government with someone more friendly to market capitalism. I tell my elected officials how I feel about this every time I vote.

I heard tonight that Congress is not going to renew the fast track that allows the president to make all the free trade deals. They also want to stop NAFTA and some of these other deals or at least renegotiate them so they are fair to the U.S. That sounds like a good start to me. Now let's see if they can get that done.

Anyone ever see Michael Moore's 911 movie. In it there was a piece on how America's own needs much more attention than the outside world. In my little pea brain, I would think before going out and saving the world, one should cover their own base first, and if successful go out then and only then it would be okay to go out and conquer the rest of the world.
Very well put - KVCAR2

Americans can go to homeless shelters and get a bed and get fed once a day and get free health care if they are out of money. That's tough living, but it is living! It could be a lot worse.
We are headed for communism eventually if we can't get off the religious kicks that give privilidge in our society.
And if NAFTA goes, prices will skyrocket. The middle class is dependent on the immigrants and imbalanced trade agreements to keep prices down.

I suppose the politicians believe that those other people will eventually be voting in an election for them. If we, as voters, do not let our representatives know our thoughts about their legislation, they will continue to ignore us in favor of others who they hope to gain as contributors and voters in the future since they already have us on board.
Let them know what you think and want - it is important to contact them and write knowledgeable comments on their agendas. Remember, their advisors are young, inexperienced bureaucrats that we did not vote for and those are the ones running the whole show. The bureaucrats must be exposed for their waste of tax dollars, energy, and lack of knowledge on the subjects they advise our electorate about. The purpose of bureaucrats is to expand their control and numbers to keep their jobs intact - they do this very well in every department of the federal and state and county governments. Start complaining and maybe things will start changing. There are 3 equal departments of our federal government - congressional, judicial, and executive - that operate as equal arms of every decision. The executive department, contrary to uneducated voters' belief, does not control the entire show - the power to effect change is divided constitutionally between all three departments who are all equally responsible for the results we experience in our government. You and I, as voters, are able only to influence two of those departments - Executive and Congressional - by our votes and by our supportive/nonsupportive response to current legislation. It is important that you learn to contact your representatives, senators, and executive branch members and comment responsibly and intelligently on current issues so they are able to represent you more fully.
Comment to them:
1. you are not happy about any federal funds they spend to support or visit any other country or government.
2. you suggest they poll their immediate constituency about the major issues they will be voting on. Believe it or not, just 20 years ago many senators and congresspersons would regulary send polls by U.S. mail to their constituents and ask our exact opinions about what was before Congress. I always made it a point to answer those right away since that was my way to effect change in my experience with the federal government. Why can't they poll us by email and then vote accordingly instead of taking all the lobbyists' money and perks?
Of course, please understand that our Congressional and Executive branches seem much more interested in raising election funds, lobbyist perks, and getting lost in the social whirl inside the beltway (Wash, D.C.) than in representing the ones that put them there. This is what makes the whole system seem like a washout. There really is NO ONE in D.C. who is still in touch with the mainstream citizens in this country.
If you just now found out how the US govt. is supporting so many other govts. in the world, you really need to review history and find out there is great historical background to support the govt. in doing so. It is distasteful to most avg. citizens but the govt. is not representing the avg. citizens - it is representing the financial supporters of the individuals who are elected. Cynical?? Of course...
If you worry about this, you will be unhappy forever...so better to vote your mind and comment appropriately when necessary and then live FREE.

Even though I happen to agree that we should be taking care of Americans first, I find it amazing that so many people seem to think that all of our domestic problems started under this administration.

First, I think, we should stop killing people in other countries. Then, of course, we must consider putting our own people and the welfare of Americans as a first priority.
