I need serious answers. I am aware that it would probably be easier to have a mechanic fix it but it would cost money that I don't have.

Dear Clutch-

Danger Will Robinson, Danger!

The job that you are about to embark on should not be performed.

Replace the entire compressor.

Replacing the clutch in the front of the compressor is asking for leaks. The new R-134A systems operate at higher pressures than the old R-12 systems. The molecules that create this gas are smaller, and are more easily released through bad seal to shaft contact.

Replacing the compressor is a very simple operation too. Much less time consuming, and its insurance that you will not have a failure soon after the install.

The removal of the clutches is going to require an evacuation of the R-134A and its oil from the system anyway, so it makes more sence to replace the entire compressor, reseal it with new O-Rings on the pressure lines, and re-pressurize the system.

A/C 101:

During the time the origional compressor was in operation grit from dust and dirt accumulated around the shaft where the seal is sitting. There is a very small grove that gets worn into the shaft from this seal and the grit. Works just like sand paper.

When you go to replace this clutch, you are going to replace the seal, but not that shaft. The seal will no longer be making 100% contact in that area. This becomes a natural point for a leak, and that is the type of area that R-134A is looking for.

The other issue that you may encounter is that the clutch parts may not be available seperately, or are not serviceable and individual parts. Yes you can have the compressor rebuilt, but by the time you do this, the new compressor or re-manufactured compressor from the dealership may only be a few dollars more. So what did you gain? All of the liability, and unreliability of a compressor that will more than likely fail in a short period of time.

I would far prefer to be sold a remanufactured compressor from a dealership, and get a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty on the part(s), knowing that if that part fails, I can get a new one for free.

I hope that will assist you in your decission.

Are you aware that Honda is fixing some CRV AC compressors for free due to a long-time factory defect? I think these fixes go back to at least year 2000 models.

Check it out!

It's probably NOT the clutch.

See a A/C service station.

Or just start replacing a bunch of good parts for other good parts.
