The hard drive can be replaced! Depending on the design of the laptop it may be a very easy job, or much of the machine may need to be disassembled.
The cost will depend on the amount of work needed, and the size of the hard drive you are buying!

Hard drive is very easy to replace.
My only suggestion is to purchase a 7200rpm drive (5400rpm as a minimum - NO 4200RPM!!!) as drive speed will contribute to overall performance and cost difference is minimal.
The installation is very easy - usually there is an external drive access door (on most laptops), but sometimes the drive is under the keyboard :( - but that is only slightly more complicated to access (more screws, carefully remove keyboard, etc...)
Not difficult, don't sweat it. If you don't feel comfortable, find a nerd to help you and kick him/her $20. Total time to replace a harddrive is about 15 minutes (even if you have to pull the keyboard). The serious time is in installing/patching/customizing the operating system (not to mention data restore time).
Best of success.

Laptops cost nothing these days. It would probably cost the same as a new harddrive.

yeah, pretty easy to do to, will run you the same as a normal size HD. so cost depends on the capacity of the HD.
