Well both of the DHCP answers are correct IF THE USER IS USING DHCP.. if he wants to hide.. he will find out what DHCP addresses are being used and switch to a STATIC address outside the DHCP range...then you wont see him at the router (If its linksys, dlink etc..)
There are indeed internet protection suites that will find any "new" users or discover all users on the wireless.. These are nice things to have.. I use Trend Micro's but others are just as good.
First and formost TURN ON YOUR ROUTERS secuirty measures!!!! Use WPA and a good password.. this gets rid of 98+% of those attempting to use your system. Just enable the secure features and if one is on there they wont be.

If you go into your router and look in the DHCP area, you will see a list of all the computers that have been assigned IP addresses on your network. If there are any that are no yours, then someone is tapped into your network. Check your network password at once to lock them out.
If you have a good firewall (not just the free one with Windows), it will provide you a list of all the computers that have accessed your network and when. Once you have the computer name, good luck finding out who it belongs to....

You are already half way there...you are on the Internet and there are programs available that you can purchase that you can install....some of these programs will tell you the hackers IP address and even location of the PC...

My router under the administration tab has a log to keep track of incoming and outgoing traffic, but it has to be enabled. Linksys WRT54GS.
