No. In fact, overtime is usually time and a half... I always hope for more than 40 hours a week just for the overtime pay.

Now, if they work you over 40 hours and DON'T pay overtime, I'm not sure if THAT's legal or not.

**EDIT** oh yeah, like the guy a few posters below me said, if you are salaried, you may not have much say-so. When I was a teacher, my salary paid me for my 8 hours a day. Lugging paperwork home and making lesson plans, tests, documentation, grading, etc... all those hours were my own time. No extra pay, there.

There are so many different considerations, such as the size of the company; is it inter-state, and so forth. No, it is not illegal to have employees work more than 40 hours a week. But, except for small in-state companies (the so-called Mom & Pops), they are required to pay time and a half for overtime.

Any employment standards for adults are largely up to the agreement between the employee and employer. They can require whatever hours they want, as long as you agree to it. Minors cannot work more than 40 hours a week.

Check your state labor laws. But if was a condition upon hiring, and they pay you overtime for the work, then I don't think this is illegal. But go to your dept of labor's website and find out for sure. I know that federally, this is not a crime.
