Gonna take a wild guess and rethink your question /// Why Didn't Spain Absorb Portugal - - - erasing Portugal's identity as a Nation.

And that is a 'valid' question. The Iberian Peninsula doesn't quite seem big enough for two countries especially when one considers France and Modern Germany. Quite bluntly the Portuguese are most likely the original Iberians pushed to the Atlantic edge by horde of 'Romans.' As noted Spain twice tried to take over, but at some point realized it would not happen - - - if pressed into an anihilating war the Portuguesse could go up into the Mountains.
That is the other reason why Portiugal kept its National identity. A solid barrier the Catabrian Mountains in the Northeast, below the Sierra De Estrella, then the hilly country shielding the Guadina River. The Mountain barrier was enough of a hindrance that it kept the Spaniards at bay.
What is truly odd - - - is that Portugal didn't over run Spain. But there was an even more complicated reason for that.

Portugal was actually incorporated into Spain in 1580 under Philip II of Spain. It became independent again in 1640.

Spain did invade Portugal at least twice, each time when the king died without a heir. Check the history.
