the dime analogy is a little weak. a better version is if you wanted to get rid of a bunch of beggars so you pay the craziest one to attack your family so the cops will crack down on them.

carter didn't support the sandanistas. his policy was to pressure the Samozas into being less violent so they would be more popular in nicaragua. he threatened to with draw support if they didn't stop the human rights violations.

No, now they control Fatah and the West Bank. They have overthrown the elected government and gotten away with it.

History is full of such things. For instance, President Carter supported the Sandinistas and look what that resulted in. On the other hand, President Kennedy decided not to support the Cubans and that almost caused WWIII. It's one of those things that is a gamble. If the ploy works, great! If it doesn't, it gets dealt with in one way or another. In addition, one doesn't know how this will turn out. The Hamas coup in Gaza may be the best thing that has happened for the Palestinian Authority and could ultimately lead to a stable Palestinian state as Gaza cannot stand alone and the people will turn on Hamas for causing greater difficulties. All Abbas has to do is keep up the pressure and wait.

Having the US Navy blockade the ports and strangling the econmy which lead to his downfall sure sounds like support to me.

In retrospect, it doesn't matter who they back! We don't have any
thing to say about it! After all, look at some of the 'wonderful' choices we have made as far as allies, including Iran, and Iraq?
Some of the most controversial regimes, have had US right there by their side! So who are we to judge about what any other country does, or how they handle their foreign policies?

In retrospect you can give a dime to a beggar that later mugs you. However the dime you gave him did not make him better off or made him mug you.

Those two main gangs - the Fatah (PLO) and the Hamas - play off each other.

By switching between "good terrorist" and "bad terrorist" roles they extort more money from the US, EU, and Israel.

Smart. The question is: do they come up these tactics themselves? or learn them from Russians?

In an effort to control the numbers no. But you can Monday morning quarter back this one to death. When, I wonder, will there be peace in the kingdom. IF ever. Thanks.
