Why were Americans so afraid of a strong national government? In the wake of the war, and given that fear, how was the Articles of Confederation government constructed? How was it successful? In what ways did it fail?

Marie, this is MORE than one question for your history homework. Daily you ask several questions about your history homework for others to do the work for you! Is it that you are too damned lazy to do the reading and to answer your own questions, or are you unable to read and think. The latter is WHY you have a brain. Now begin to use it!!!

America did not need or want a strong central government.
-- The colonists came from several European nations. The Dutch and German and Scots did not like the idea of domination by people of English heritage.
-- The colonists represented several Christian sects. The Puritanical attitudes of New England were very different than a much more liberal Virginia.
-- The colonists had very different economic interests. Some colonies existed because of trade itself, some were more diverse agriculturally and self-sufficient, others were dependent upon a few crops and the ability to trade them.
-- The distance between the colonies could be weeks in the Summer and months in the Winter. This made local government more appealing.
-- The colonies had different ideas about dealing with England and the other European powers.
-- Some of the colonies were vulnerable to different enemies, European or Indian.
-- Massachusetts may have feared that the other colonies were not as committed to revolution, South Carolina may have only been going along to avoid the wrath of the other colonies.
The Articles of Confederation were somewhat toothless. They had little in the way of financing or enforcement. It was a successful interim step towards a better thought plan for success.

The colonists saw a strong government as a threat to their way of life for it reminded them of life under the King. A strong central government under the King was able to suspened the writ of Hapeus Corpus. The king was able to pass laws which broke basic right of the time (taxes, seltering soldiers, etc.) The A of C were created to vest the power in the states. The A of C provided no executive branch or judiciary branch (fear of strong central gov). The A of C "Congress" could not regulate taxes. A key event that showed the weakness of the A of C was Shay's Rebellion. The one accomplishment of the A of C was the Northwest Ordinace. THis devided up the land in Ohio, Mich etc. The land was cut into 6x6 squares. With the 16th square reserved for public education. Hence townships in the area. Also the ordinace prohibited slavery in the territories.
