I purchased a Maytag Performa dryer in August 2006. Within three months it stopped tumbling. The repairman came and fixed it, saying the belt had snappe. Two months later it completely stopped working. The repairmantold me immediately there was nothing he could do b/c I had it plugged in to an outlet that was only getting 110 volts. I asked why it had worked for a while and he said it was "pulling" electricity from my other appliances -- sounded feasible b/c my fridge had not run well since moving there ... perhaps the dryer was "stealing" some of its power. But now my landlord says certain it's a 220 volt outlet and no one else had problems using a dryer at that outlet. He suggests they're trying to get out of covering it under the warranty (which expires next month). I'm so confused. Help!

It's as easy as calling an electrician out to inspect and giving you written documentation to show to the repair person or your land lord (depending on the outcome).

The cost of doing that is minimal, and far less than the cost of a new dryer.

A 220v outlet is completely different from a 110v... the plugs for either will not fit in the wrong outlet.

A repairman that tells you it is only getting 110v... that sounds fishy right off the start...

Anyone who can check the outlet with a volt-meter can tell you if all the prongs on the outlet are working or not. If not.. then the landlord needs to work on the electric.

Delaying a repair til the warranty runs out happens more often than it should... do not wait for the time to expire... get another service tech in to look at the situation, and give you an estimate (this should be free) - and just to be on the safe side... get someone to check that outlet with a meter (a handyman, or electrician can do this)

Good Luck

Your repairman needs to be reported to Maytag. A 220 dryer won't work on 110 volts. If you tried, it would burn up the motor. It can't pull power from other appliances. You need to send a registered letter to the store you purchased it from, one to Maytag, and one to the repair department, and one to the district attorney that handles consumer affairs.

Get an independent opinion (a different repairman, or an electrician). Get in contact with your State Attorney General office. They deal with issues of warranties in your state. You should be able to get in touch with them thru the net, or on the phone ( the number should be in the Blue Pages in your phone book).
