Go to any library and find the National Geographic Magazine collection. Pick out the ones from year you're looking for and there are going to be ads for automobiles and major appliances, and vacation packages.

Check the GDP (gross domestic product) for that year, or something like that, I can't remember if that is what it was called...we studied it in Civics, but...you know...summer. Great idea though. :)
