Take initiative and start making some money by mowing lawns and washing cars for your neighbors. Show your parents that your being serious about this. You may even get them to go 50 50 and help you out instead of complaining about what you want.

Your parents probably think that u will put school second. If u really want to become a metal/rock artist, u should have a plan and talk to your parents. Let them know that u know how important school is and that u can do both. It makes no sense having a record deal if u can't read the contract. lol
You're only 13, so u should probably ask your parents for some kind of allowance; u can wash dishes, clean up or help your parents.
Good luck.

Instead of trying to convince them to buy u a guitar why do u try to convince them to let u take lessons first....maybe if u show them that u are dedicated by trying and not quitting lessons u can prove to them that getting a guitar wont just be a waste of money and that it wont be a loud noise in the wrong way--that way if u take lessons the instructor might have a guitar that he or she will let u take home to borrow so that u can practice--which can be the next best thing, but if all in all everything turns out then u can try to convince them that buying u an authentic guitar and this time they'd have no reason to really say no
hope that helps ya, and good luck in getting ur guitar. ROCK ON!! --lol

Here's a different idea, I know you want an electric guitar and I don't blame you (all though I am not a musician myself). It is to my understanding that some bands will start writting songs or at least formulate ideas on the acoustic guitar before going electric.
So it seems to me like learning on your acoustic guitar first will help you become a better musician in the long run when you are forced to more on the core sound of a song first. Once you practice and master your craft on the acoustic, then maybe you can convince your parents to help buy you that electric guitar.
But as for right now, the acoustic gives you the ability to learn your craft first, it's quiter than the electric guitar, but it will give you the ability to show your parents how serious you are about crafting yourself a musician.
Also while you can ask for advice on here as to what to say your parents, noone knows them any better than you do as to what to say and how they will react. I can only imagine that they in their hearts want what is best for you, and all though you may not see it now, you will someday.
However if you truly have a dream, stick to it, and you never know what can happen if you work hard enough. I saw Chris Cornell (the famed singer from the 90s band Soundgarden, and most recently of Audioslave) perform with full band live in Baltimore back in April.
One of the things that I remember the most about that show is the young guitar player in has band (at best in his early 20s) absolutely nail the guitar solo in the Audioslave song "Like a Stone." Tom Morello is one of the most respected and highly regarded rock guitar players today, and that was his solo, and I also saw Audioslave themselves live which included that song. To me for this kid to be dead on with the solo is saying something.
You never know where you can go if you work hard enough. I would also say though that you have to be very lucky to make it in the music industry to make it. Think about all of the local bands in the closet major city to you, think about all of the hard work they will put in and think about how very few if any will get a big time deal. Keep the dream alive, but I would say always have a back up plan in mind, and consider the things your parents have to say. They just might be smarter than you think.

Given the out-right crap today's "rock/metal" has become, I don't blame your parents for putting their foot down on your dream. But do you really want to gain their loving support for your dream? Think about this:
Rock n' roll was founded on DEFIANCE of parental authority and The Rules. And that defiance was the fuel for rock musicians to practice for long days on end, mastering their skill--and forging their place in rock history.
Recipe for rock success:
Forget convincing your parents. Their mind's made up.
Get a legit job. Bust azz to EARN the $$$ to buy your rig and whatever is needed to grab the sound you want.
LEARN FROM THE OLD SCHOOL. GO BACK 38 YEARS INTO ROCK HISTORY; today's bands have NO CLUE what REAL ROCK is about. That's why they're good to last a week.
Once you got the rig--PRACTICE FOR DAYS AND DAYS ON END....just like Eddie, Sammy and Stevie Ray Vaughn all did.
READ THE STORIES OF THESE GUYS--LEARN FROM THEIR MISTAKES--AVOID THOSE MISTAKES. You'll real quick know what I mean here.
NEVER SELL OUT. If I got to explain this one, you need to embark on a burger-flipping career.
All I ask is you thank "Mr. Wizard" on your first break-away multi platinum selling CD. Now.....bust azz and ROCK HARD!!

You need to work for your onw money and buy your onw guitar. I had to that will my drum sets & guitars. When I was 16. I worked for my step-dad part time to earn enough money to buy my first Paiste 400 cymbals back in 1986 or 87.
It was so cool. Follow your dreams...but don';t expect your preant to buy your gear for you. You need to find ways to earn your money honestly. If you truly want your musician dream...then you'll have to work for it honestly son! =) I'm not lying to you because I've had to so this all my life since I was 16. I'm 36 now. My parents have always hated my music. They never once showed up and any of my past drum contests or whatever I else did musically! But they respect me now because today I produce my own CDS/DVDs without their help. They know it too!
Some ideas for you are : Take out the trash, clean up the room, cut the grass, wash your parents cart, wash your neighbors cars, cut your neigbors grass, pickup up your neighbors leaves or whatever. Whatever you have do ...do it honestly! That means no stealing or hocking gear to buy it. That's for wimps!!! Be a real man son and earn your money honestly & then go buy your own gear. You'll respect yourself more and so will your parents too down the road. Trsut me on this...I know!

Make the money on your own. Start doing yard work, chores for family an neighbors. Save up for it. I had the same dream. I had seen bands on stage, watched the crowd respond to them and knew that's where I wanted to be. I told my parents, my mom said sure. But I would have to take music lessons. I thought, no problem. Came the day of my first lesson, I raced home from school only to find a huge bearded man sitting in my living room with a mother_____ing accordian! My 'mutha' decided she liked the accordian better than the guitar. Back then you didn't argue with your parents. I took accordian lessons for two years while working four jobs after school and on weekends. Eventually I could afford a cheap guitar and tiny amp from JC Penney's. Bought a book on how to play and taught myself. Played in lots of garage bands, a couple working bands for the next 10 years. Never made it big, but that was the most fun time of my life. If you want it kid, you're going to have to do it yourself. Good luck.

Save up and buy your own. I'll tell you something they don't want you to know. They don't want to listen to you practice because at first you suck. You have hundreds of lyrics, that's great, you don't need a guitar to write lyrics, just a notebook. I'm sure you have a more than one notebook. Also you can put them in your Yahoo notebook. It's in the same place as your yahoo mail.
