To give a short answer, you must get a BS or BA degree in college, then go to med school for four years to get your MD, then do a Surgical residency for 3 -7 years, depending on what specialties in surgery you are interested in. So, you might be in school and training for as many as 15 years after high school before you are fully independent.

Med schools cost $30,000 to $50,000 a year. There are not many scholarships.

The Uiversity of Florida is pretty respectable, but otherwise you would probably be better off leaving FL for school. If you are a good enough student to get into med school, then you are a good enough student to get into one of the elite colleges.

Med school requires total dedication and a LOT of hard work. Good luck with your dream!

You might want to start here: http://www.ama-assn.org/

On the top menu you will see Med School and Residency. That site will give you factual information versus anonymous opinion.
