There are no schools in the SW states that are ranked among the top schools. Some of the departments in some of the schools are pretty respectable, but all of those schools are really large, let in just about anyone who applies and have gigantic classes. I once did part of a lecture to a class when I was visiting U of Arizona that was in the state auditorium. There must have been at least 3000 kids there. In my own school I never lectured to a class larger than 40.

If you have to go to them it IS possible to get a decent education. But you have to work at finding it, and you can certainly avoid being educated and still get a degree. That's too bad.

Try checking out the California schools. The U of C system is excellent. Plus there is Stanford, of course, and some other private schools that are pretty good.

Otherwise, you are going to have to go back East.

Use the college match program at princetonreview.com or collegeboard.com to find some good schools.

Good luck.
