Love. It's a no brainer. Without the love, you've got nothing. There is nothing in a relationship without love. It keeps everything together no matter what. And if it is really love, then the chemistry and compromise will be there as well.

What is most important in a relationship, is that you make the decision in the beginning that you want to be with that person. I guess I'm talking more in terms of a marriage. If you don't ever stop to decide whether you really want to be with them, then you won't have the base emotion you need to keep working it through. Relationships are TOUGH, and you've got to WANT it to work.
A lot of people just go with the flow, they meet some one, they get excited about them, they keep going out with them, but they just go along without ever stopping to think the question, "Would I be OK with sticking it out with this person for a whole lifetime, and be sitting next to them in the rocking chairs when I'm 80?"

I was going to say trust. But after I thought it over I decided on Love, because if you both truly love each other, you already have trust, a willingness to compromise, and obvious chemistry.

compromise - wthout having a two-way street in a relationship, the other two just aren't going to happen with any reularity that will satisfy both people

Definitely love...compromise can be important, but it's love that makes us willing to do it.
