Because Freemasonry is all about being "on the Square". There is an ancient belief system that buildings should be built in harmony with their surroundings; in India they call this "vastu". Freemasonry is a variant of this system. When buildings are 'in harmony" with the environment the people who use them are also "in harmony" with their surroundings.

Because Masonic lodges are oriented to represent the building of King Solomons temple. It is symbolic.
