I need to find a flower that starts with the letter A, to give as a gift to a person who's name begins with A.

There are several "A" flowers, but most are more the kind of flower you'd have in your garden than the kind you'd buy at the florist.

Still, here are a few:

Azalea
Anemone (not a sea anemone! It's a kind of buttercup)
African daisy
African violet (could buy them one in a pot as a houseplant)
Aster
Aloe

Wikipedia has a nice list of flowering plants arranged alphabetically, but some of the "A" names are the scientific rather than the common name.

Anemone are mostly spring flowers but Anemone x hybrida 'Honorine Jobert' is a japanese anemone that blooms in summer.

Asters bloom in fall.
Azaleas are spring flowers.
Aquilegia is columbine another spring flower.

Astilbe is just coming into bloom. My favorite is Astilbe pumila chinensis with very dark fine foliage that blooms with compact plum blossoms.

asters, anemone, alyssum, ageratum, allium, amaryllis, amaranthus, armerias (sea thrift)...... not sure if you want cut flowers or if you are giving plants for a bed...... either way you are an awesome friend, i would absolutely love to receive a gift like this!!! a whole bed or bouquet of flowers that start with my initial!!!! have fun planning this!

Although the the flower is brown and inconspicuous, Aspidistra, the"cast iron plant" will probably outlast most friendships, think of it as tough love! RScott
