Hello, i was watching the critters in my saltwater aquarium today, when i noticed a small "what appears to be" a feather duster pertruding from a small tube, at the bottom of one of my live rocks.. is this a good sign? i know he was not there before or, at least, i have not seen him before...could he have been seeded there from something else? it is only about 1/4 inch(or less) long when extended, and just looks like a small tube when in hiding...kinda looks like a white palm tree when extended....
thanks, skip

I get the small feather dusters on live rock all the time - I've seen many with white fans, but a few have a bright orange-red. And you're correct, that's what it is. The ones you're seeing are related to the large Hawaiian types you can buy, but yours won't get that big - about an inch long tube at most is more likely.
I suppose that it would be a good sign to have them in the tank - they would have to have good water quality to survive, and they'll help clean up the small particles of food left from messy fish by filtering them out of the water. (They'll eventually try and colonize the inside of the glass in the tank too.)

thats normal, wait a few more weeks and see how many more pop out. you'll starg seeing worms, sponges, mini starfish and little guys swimming around the tank, all good signs, look into some picturtes of copopods. and those are feathe dusters. they are there to help keep you satisfied until you buy coral...lol you can look on wetwebmedia.com if you see anything really weird or larger critter you didnt add, crabs and shrimp are fairly commen, most are fine and wont hurt anything, but a few can cause damage, but for the most part if you dont see a problem, you can assume they're ok.

Yeah Feather Dusters are great for your tank, there not bad at all! These people that are saying "ewww" dont know what there talking about! These are no harm, and very easy to take care of, you dont have to feed them or any thing. If its white and brown, its the most comon feather duster A.K.A (hawiian). And if its red and white, its a socail feather duster. Good luck~~~!!! seems like your doing a good job on your aquarium! by the way i have about 35 of them in my 24 gallon :)

Yes that is good.
Sounds like a feather duster. They are actually worms, and they secret that "tube" as their protection. He was probably there all along, and they do grow and spread.

I would say that this is a good sign. You want your live rock to actually be live, and if the critters that tagged on the rock are starting to grow then you must be doing something right.
