My boss just laid it out on the line what he thought of me as his first impression, and it wasn't exactly nice. I was slightly offended, but he said he definitely changed his mind because otherwise I wouldn't have been hired. Would you be offended if your boss told you he had a bad impression of you in the beginning?

I just think maybe he should've held off on telling me what he thought of me. I just started my job! Obviously I was good enough to get hired, but he said some somewhat offensive things about how he felt about me.

Been there and yes I was I was told that everyone had a bad impression of me and told my boss that she shouldn't hire me and she told me she was glad she didn't listen and went against her own gut feeling and I ended up lasting at that company longer than her and the other employees. But I think I could've went the rest of my life without knowing what she said.

It depends on the real reason he decided to tell you, what was the purpose of him telling you now? People who are driven to be in control often use a mixed message delivery(exactly why you're asking this question) to disguise the need to declare their feelings of superiority. If his comments questioned your character or morals enough to make you feel insulted, why would that be any different than someone other than a boss saying it?
If you where to pose a question to him saying you appreciated his honesty but where offended and would like an explanation of what those impressions where based on, I guarantee you will get either a sincere apology or a big line of bull. I hope you get the apology, you deserve it. It is a form of abuse and not to be toleranted. If not, watch out, he will want to find another way to attack you because you just took away his superiority.

Yes, I would be offended. I think that kind of behavior is very unprofessional. If your boss was giving you feedback that was valuable information for doing your job better, that's one thing. If he's just telling you his personal feelings or perceptions, he's out of line. He needs to at least appear to be supportive and nonjudgemental in the workplace, regardless of what his personal feelings are. Besides that, it's a very poor way of motivating his employees. Who wants to work for someone like that?

yes I would ! and if he would have sad that at the interview and I got the job I would turned it down and let him know that he was to unprofessional for me to work for.

he sounds like a Prick, and his reason for saying that is #1 is so you can work harder and prove him wrong , #2 now he knows you'll put up with his bull shi* just to have a job.

I have never been told that and have not and would not ever say that anyone that.

No. He hired you, didn't he?
I often have bad first impressions of people who later become good friends. I'm GLAD I was wrong!
