-2(t-5)+7t=3t-8

I think my main problem with Algebra is that I cannot visualize it. I failed it in high school yet I aced Geometry. I don't have enough patience for Algebra.

You need to back up and relearn the basics

1) associative property
2) comunitive property
3) distributive property

Using those properties you can solve your equation above

-2(t-5) + 7t = 3t-8
-2t + 10 + 7t = 3t - 8
-2t + 7t - 3t = -8 - 10
2t = -18
t = -9

I was the same way! I had to go to sumemr school for algebra 1 and now I'm in summer school for algebra 2 but I got a B in geometry! What's up w/ that?! lol...but it looks to me like you just distribute...

-2(t-5)+7t=3t-8
-2t+10+7t=3t-8

After you distribute combine like terms...

5t+10=3t-8

add 8 to both sides

5t+18=3t

subtract 5t from both sides

18=-2t

divide by -2 on each side

t= 9

Algebra is the mathematics of the unknown.
You will need it in so many ways in life.
-2(t-5)+7t=3t-8
Order of operation, first remove brackets, apply signs.
-2T + 10 + 7t = 3t - 8
Collect like known/unknown terms on opposite sides.
-2t + 7t - 3t = - 8 - 10
Reduce to simplest terms.
2t = -18 or t = -9

-2t + 10 + 7t = 3t -8
get the similar terms together
like...
-2t + 7t - 3t = -8 -10
while taking terms from one side to the other make sure of changing the signs...
2t = -18
t = -9

hope this helps!!

You have two types of terms: those that are without coefficients and those that have coefficients. Put the coefficients of t on the LHS and the others on the RHS:
t(-2 +7 -3) = -8 -10
2t = -18
t = -9
If you take the time to keep track, it becomes merely a labor; take as many steps as you need. Watch the signs; this is where taking a lot of steps really helps.

-2(t-5)+7t=3t-8
-2t+10+7t=3t-8
10+5t=3t-8
10+2t= -8
2t= -18
t= -9

Now check
-2(-9-5)+7(-9)=3(-9)-8
-2(-14)+7(-9)=3(-9)-8
28-63= -27-8
-35 = -35

You start with:

-2(t-5)+7t=3t-8

Simplify:

-2t+10+7t=3t-8

Put all your like terms on one side:

2t=-18

divide both sides by two and this will solve for "t" :

t=-9

OH yeah -9. I thought you were trying to answer it with the 3t - 8 thing. :P

2007-06-29 13:46:02 · answer #8 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

-2(t-5)+7t=3t-8

-2t+10+7t=3t-8
-2t+7t-3t=-8-10
2t=-18
t=-18/2
t=-9

p.s.: you are a funny guy! xD

Hi Math is only partly algebra. Algebra is simply a way of expressing equality, nothing more. The "=" is the balance point and every thing on one side must equal what's on the other.
