While the rest of the 1st world was destroying each other & their infrastructure during WWII, the US was building theirs. Infrastructure can be used both by the rich & poor to create wealth. They also were encouraged to think for themselve & entitlements weren't then underlying current.
Today with the world preaching entitlements non-self reliance, the 1st world is becoming complacent. They are saying some one else will fix the problem. The environmentalists are saying kill the 1st world economy. If the economy goes down the pollutants will be disposed of in a more damaging way.
It is time that all acknowledge that our weapons are so powerful that fighting is no longer an option. We have to look at solution based alternatives not finger pointing. In our past we have felt that only our sect of our religion was going to live in the pleasant section of the after life kingdom. We even appeared to love the infidels so much that we were willing do what ever it took to convert them to our sect to insure that we would see them on the other side. Could it be that we are worshipping the same GOD by a different name? Can any of us truly tell if another has a relationship with the Almighty? We can even fool ourselves that we have one.

Americans have always been willing to do the hard things..the extra hours at work...turn the unimagined into reality...because of our institutional freedom, we are free to do what is required in almost any situation........if prices are too high a competitor will come along and lower the price..
France as an example...was very pleased with its 30 hour work week and lots of leisure time..they and most of Europe always considered American dumb because we work so hard..now recently they have seen the folly of all play and no work and are going back to the 40 hr work week...
It's more than just hard work..it's our generosity to the rest of the world..people respected us..now thanks to small minded, selfish people in mainly newsprint..they are succeeding at convincing their own fellow countrymen that we are their enemy.
Before WW1..we rarely got involved with the affairs of other countries unless attacked...then we regrouped and turned it loose on the attackers...and they fled...I guess a willingness to do what has to be done as a whole country is what got us where we are.
You know..a lot of countries think we owe the world something for existing...well that's not true...The USA is the greatest concept to ever have been developed on this planet, even with all our flaws and when it's gone..destroyed by the very people that need our strength, a bright light will go dark and coldness and tyranny and brutishness will return with a vengence upon the heads of the people.
I think it was Ben Franklin that said. "a person that is willing to give up some of his freedom for a little security deserves neither"

Holding 50% of the world's wealth, having a large nuclear arsenal and a strong conventional military, and being the only country to go to the moon all help.

The American Revolution and the framing of the Constitution set the stage for the enormous growth of our continental nation.
The Northwest Ordinance, passed under the Articles of Confederation helped also. It permitted the first and only growth of a massive empire by the orderly admission of free and equal states--not your great, great, great, great, great grandfather's empire. No other great power in history even imagined growing in that fashion. 1787 was a truly inventive moment in human history.
It gave us the framework for constructing the largest economy (we passed Great Britain in 1870!!!!), the most vibrant culture, the most stable yet most free political system, the best trained and best equipped military, the third most populous nation, and fourth largest nation in area. We excel in technological innovation, economic enterprise, free flow of information, free exchange of political ideas, and originality in all of the arts.
Other than that, we're just your everyday, ordinary superpower. :)
