My brother is going to Amsterdam as part of his trip around the world. I'm kinda worried because I've been hearing things about it. Such as drugs and a lot of sex. I don't know what to think.

From my experiences (I've been to Amsterdam many times), you have nothing to worry about. Amsterdam does have a seedy side but only if you go looking for it. Amsterdam is a safe, very friendly and interesting city. I consider it one of the world's greatest places to visit. I have never had any trouble there, and would be surprised if your brother ran into any problems in Amsterdam - unless he goes looking for drugs and sex, and even if he did, it wouldn't necessarily mean problems as everything is more out in the open and less taboo there.

Amsterdam is a great place and is about far more than just the legalistation of drugs and prostitutes. It's fabulous, bright and colourful. There are loads and loads of museums and galleries and coffee shops and bakerys and quirky shops.
It's a real young people's city and everyone should go. If he is unsure or a bit frightened, he may be best to take a walk down the red light district during the day rather than at night, it would definately be safer that way.
He'll have a great time.

Amsterdam is filled with many other wonderful things besides pot and hookers and besides every city in the world has those things even yours...There are many great museums, restaurants, landmarks and sights and many great things to do. If your brother plays it street smart like any tourist should, he will have no problem. Besides the pot and prostitute vendors are very organized. Coffeeshops are clearly marked as well as the Red LIght District. Your brother can easily avoid these places, he just has to not go into them! Tell him he will have a wonderful time, as a matter of fact Amsterdam is probably one of the more safer cities I've been to!

Amsterdam has less crime than the average American city, less drugs usage (even with all the people using hash, there are so much less heavy drugs users that the numbers are lower in Amsterdam,) almost never gunfights, near to no gangs and a friendly atmosphere.
The only parts of town best to avoid are well away from the touristy center of town and you will not walk into them by accident.
The only kind of crime that is a real hazard are pickpockets, and that is not worse than any big, crowded place.

There is no more sex in Amsterdam than in than in your average student town in America, but the paid kind is more open.
All people going for a travel dream about meeting this great gall or guy to take back to your hotel, but as many people are just too shy and the rest might be sharing hostel space, even that hardly happens.
Paid sex is so expensive that no young backpacker is going to pay for it, and besides, those ladies are having regular health checks. Do the girls in University?

If your brother is old enough to travel alone, he will also have learned how to take care of yourself.

Amsterdam is a safe city, I have been to it alone from my mid-teens, (my sister studied there at the time,) and I have never seen anything nasty. Only some woman in little clothes that had little luck in live. (They are in each town, most of them just not as openly.)

Amsterdam is absolutely wonderful. Of course, it has its bad parts like any other city. But I loved it there and can't wait to visit again. The people are very friendly and most of them speak english. You have nothing to worry about.

I have heard that all americans are violent with guns. Is that true?

No. you are listening to rumors.

Amsterdam is like every major city. It has its good parts, and its bad parts.
Please note that most porn is produced in the US, not Amsterdam.

Who are you listening to? People from bumf*ck, USA who never even set foot in Amsterdam?

Where does this rumor come from? Who spreads it, and why?
Cause, bottom line, it is NOT TRUE.

If you don`t believe me - come see for yourself ;)
I`ll even give you a tour!
