I'd like to be in a rural area, but still near good shopping. I'd prefer a town of around 1000 population, around 300 students in the school, lots of nature, mountains, lakes, etc. I'd also prefer a farming/ranching type of community. Thanks!

Who would choose a town where you have a watering schedule made out months in advance?! I think I'll stay away from that - thanks anyway!

Fort Collins is a bit large for what you're asking, no offense to the person above me -- but a great city to live nearby. Timnath is close by, as are Windsor and Berthoud:

There are also places on the western slope that can be remarkably beautiful, and close to Grand Junction which would have decent shopping. Maybe Fruita ( http://www.fruita.org/ ) or Montrose ( http://www.cityofmontrose.org/ ) both of which are near the GORGEOUS Uncompahgres.

It really depends on your preference. The towns on the eastern slope are a bit larger than your preference and rapidly growing, becoming part of the I-25 corridor. The western slope is a bit more untouched, less growth, but it's also further to Denver which is your closest major travel hub.

I would have 2 say Windsor ,CO. I love it there cuz its close 2 Fort Collins, Greeley, and Loveland. Denver is about 1 hour away and so is Esties Park. The Mountins are also very close by so you can go skiing or snow bording.
Windsor has many lakes here and there is really great shopping in Fort Co (Fort Colins),Greeley and in Loveland. Windsor has has many kids in our schools. Windsor isnt like a big city or out in the middle of no where it is the perfect deffinition of subbers! I hope this can help u choose where you would like to be and Windsor is a great community!

Take a look at the corridor that runs - Alamosa, Monte Vista, DelNorte. Or Salida. Or Buena Vista Honestly, living in rural Colorado and good shopping are not synonymous. Your best bet is to try to find something that's less than 3 hours drive from the Springs or Denver. But after a few weeks in Colorado, "good shopping" and Walmart begin to sound equal. Your priorities just change.

Try Fairplay. The High School graduating class this year had 17 students. Breckenridge is 30 minutes away, Denver is about 1hr 30min. It used to be a mining area, is now ranching and has tons of nature activities.

Colorado is packed with small cities. actually, everywhere in the state apart from alongside I-25. each and each of the huge cities/suburbs are alongside I-25. in case you do not care approximately being in the mountains, then there are a sequence of small cities alongside the Arkansas River in Southeastern Colorado (names like Fowler, Rocky Ford, l. a. Junta) that aren't getting many new human beings and can prefer to have you ever... notwithstanding they're greater like 3 hours from Denver. additionally, Littleton and chateau Rock are suburbs of Denver, and not something in any respect like small cities. they're detrimental techniques based on your standards.

Monument, CO
20 minutes N of Colorado Springs, 40 minutes south of Denver. My graduating class had about 110 people. Mount Herman is great for outdoor activities. Has a good mix of new and old homes.

thats a pretty tall order to fill, you cant have everything, like farming in the mountains and 1000 residents with good shopping. But go to http://www.townofcastlerock.org
I live here and love it, has everything but is still rural.
