so you are saying 500,000 iraqis died for nothing? and this went on for 10 years and U.S. official were oblivious to it's ineffectiveness?

The sanctions were a joke. Saddam paid over a billion dollars in bribes to get the enforcers to look the other way, and profited by over ten billion dollars -- which should have been spent for the benefit of the populace, but actually went to build more palaces. Over a billion dollars, in cash (US currency) was recovered from Saddam's stores after the invasion.

You need to understand sanctions and negotiations is the favor tactic of the UN. In a dictatorship the only ones hurt by sanctions are the people because the dictator will take his share of whatever comes in the country then the people get what is left.

It is the weak-minded and foolish that think sanctions work. You are correct. Military action was the appropriate thing to do. Saddam just stole more from his people rather than stop killing them and trying to kill others.
