It could be the fish were already sick. The one with the white spots probably had ich, which is a parasite.
You will want to hold off on getting any more fish - if the one had ich, the parasites will be in the tank now, and they can live for a few weks without any fish present. If you have a heater for the tank (although goldfish wouldn't need one) turn the temperature up to about 90o for two weeks before you add more fish. If you don't have a heater, you can add salt or Quick Cure (you can get this at WalMart, it's in a small bottle that's hanging above the other fish supplies) as directed in this link: http://www.skepticalaquarist.com/docs/health/ich.shtml Treat just as you would with fish in the tank, and for 14 days. Don't get any more fish at the same store, because the infected ones will have spead the parasite to others.
You could also clean the tank (including gravel, filter, and decorations) out with a 5% bleach solution (1 part bleach to 19 parts water) and let this sit for 15 minutes. Rinse very well before using the tank again, and add a few extra drops of dechlorinator the first time you fill it with water.

Hi Jilly, You need to clean the tank & all the décor & gravel thoroughly in warm water with salt but ensure you use no soaps, solvents or detergents. You are probably right that you had couple of fish that were already sick when you bought them. You would do better to get fish from a store that only sells fish-that way, even though you may pay slightly more you will get better quality fish as well as good advice from the staff.
The attached link tells you all about starting out with Goldfish, it's worth reading through before you make any further purchases, good luck with your new fish!

well the goldfish with the spots more than liely died from a disease called ick and the other one probably got that disease too. what i would do is get some ick treatment for the tank and wait a few days for it to work and then get a new fish so that u will know there are no diseases in the tank. u could try this medicine called quick cure or ick or this other treatment called fungus clear by "jungle". also check the temperature of your tank and the ph. hope that helped.

If the fish came from Wal*Mart with the white spot, that's normal. Wal*Mart hates fish and literally kills them. The spot is from you changing their diet (not sure!!) Maybe the other fish died of stress, fish waste, wrong water conditions, or anything else that kills fish. I say you drain the water, sterilize any decor, fish it with tap water and de-chlorinate it. Hopes this helps.

That sounds like ich.
What were the steps you took in setting up the tank? How long was it running and how big is it?

sounds like the tank has ich in it. You should clean the tank out and put ich treatment in it before getting new fish.
