That is a really tiny tank. Even a pair of Apistogrammas would be diffilcult to keep in a 5 gallon. I recommend you buy a pair of killifish. They are fascinating, do great in a 5 gallon tank and are some of the most beautiful fish you'll ever see. The American Killifish Association, The Chicago Killifish Association and a lot of other places will have information about Killifish. www.aquabid.com and sometimes ebay sell killifish eggs. Sometimes local pet shops sell killifish though not very often and the varieties they have are usually below average. Find out if there is a local Killifish club. Cichlids are my personal favorite though for a 5 gallon I really recommend you get a pair of killifish. You won't be disappointed.

No Cichlid can ever survive happily in a 5 gallon tank. If you went with a 10 gallon, you could probably keep a coulple Rams or some Tanganyikan Shell Dwellers, but not much else. If you only have room or money for a 5 gallon, the only fish that would work is a Betta. If you want Cichlids, you really need to do a lot of research because they are a fish that you could kill with one tiny mistake. Bettas are much easier to care for. Good luck!

Cichlids need big tanks. They can be quite aggressive and territorial. Any of the "small" ones you see are babies...they will get a lot bigger and will most likely end up killing each other in a space that small.

If you want a cichlid tank you will need to set up something about 8-10 times that size. 40 gallons would be a minimum in my opinion..and that alone will not house all breeds.

I would look into setting up that tank for guppies or neon tetras, guppies have a lot more personality than most people recognize and will do fine in that tank.

Virtually no cichlids will do well in a 5 gallon tank. There are a few species that would do ok, but nothing that a beginner would want, and none that are brightly colored as you want.
