You COULD.
But I don't recommend it.

Rain-X works better than wax.

I woudln't, nor would I use Rain-X -- I tried that stuff once and driving at night with wipers on was HORRIBLE! Waxing the windshield would likely cause a similar effect.

That stuff causes the tiny film of water left on the windshield by even brand new wipers to bead up into microscopic droplets, leaving a "smear" of fog trailing behind the wipers in both directions. It only lasts for a fraction of a second, but when an oncoming car's headlights hit that film, it made it impossible to see through that trailing smear.

Rain-X works best on side and rear windows, and I'll still use it for that, but never on the windshield - I keep that as clean as possible and de-grease the wiper blades too.

NOOOOO! Don't wax your windshield!
It might seem like a nice idea until you get in the rain at night and your wipers will just streak the glass.
RainX does work, but only when it's freshly applied and when you're driving fast enough for the wind to blow the water off the glass. It also causes your wiper blades to harden and become ineffective after a short time.

We can put a man on the moon, but wiper blades have been almost the same since the first cars were built. They do work well though if you keep them cleaned off (just wipe them with a soft cloth & mild detergent) until they start to streak, then, just replace them. Any foreign material on the glass (dirt, rainX, and yes, WAX) will reduce their effectiveness and lifetime.

Well, yes, I suppose technically you could, but I wouldn't: Use a glass cutting compound (very fine abrasive paste/liquid) to get your screen extra-clean and clear.

I've had mixed experiences with Rain-X and similar: It works brilliantly on the side windows, but on the front screen, it seems to get a very light smearing effect when the wipers are on, which I found annoying.

Yes on both counts, but it creates a bad glare from sunlight.
