No, I think you have to go to college for 7 years and work with animals to be one of those. Your Dad was most likely a 'seaman' or a 'sailor'.

to be a vet (and eligible for bens), by the VA rules, he must serve for active duty for a *minimum* of 2 years. the only exception is if he was actually injured/died while on duty, and has a service connected disability.

Yes. He's a veteran if he served in the armed forces. It doesn't matter what he did while he was there.
