It's because of the obvious answer: to attract members of the opposite sex, in this case men.
But it might not be only because of this. Research shows that it could also be because shorter skirts make the tennis players move quickly and are more dynamic.
Another reason could be because of the weather, usually one gets very hot and sweaty when playing tennis which is why the clothes may seem 'short'.
Some women just generally chose to wear short skirts because that is the model, colour and layout they like best!
I hope that helps!

Yes I was sufering channels last night and saw a russian gal at wimbleton who's skirt was well not so much of a skirt. I would think fashion has really swung into selling sex as a tennis player since Kournakova made such an impact on the sex sell but honestly it is going a bit to far for a place like Wimbleton, the game is made from tradition so lets keep atleast some of it.

Socially, it is more acceptable for women to wear shorter skirts, which would be more comfortable and less restricting while playing. And while many women are very trendy, or at least trying to be, that is the main goal. To wear something that will be comfortable to play in and won't restrict the woman in any way.
And, who knows, what with Venus Williams getting permission from the Wimbledon officials to wear knickers. Maybe she'll start something and we'll see more and more women wearing shorts instead of skirts.
Also, a lot of women already wear short shorts underneath their skirts anyways.

I think the main rule for dress at Wimbledom would be a very short skirt, and white panties underneath. That would increase viewership by 100%. It's nice to see a lot of pretty leg, and the higher up the leg, the better they are.

I think it's because nowadays, the majority of women players wear tights underneath the skirts, unlike in the past where they wore panties. And the skirts are partially made of some expendable, tube-garterslike material which enables them hold their spare service ball in place. No more pockets these days.

Most ladies tennis players now wear incredibly big pants, resembling boxer shorts, so the small skirt is not revealing.

I don't know but I'm pleased from a personal standpoint because I'm short and skirts cut to fit a woman 5'8" (the length skirts are cut to fit) are a bit long on me. Now I can buy skirts in my size that hit just below the panty line, like they're supposed to!!!!!

yes.. their clothes too are getting less and less, while the men got to cover more and more of their bodies.. remember in the 80s, men wear short pants, very short..
ladies should wear pants too, like ana ivanovic. look better than skirt. it looks funny when the ladies have to lift their skirts to keep the ball underneath.
