how do i prevent windows messanger from putting an icon on the task bar on start up?

Go into the msconfig utility and uncheck it. Start>Run, in the run box type msconfig and then choose the Startup tab.

Go to Tools-Options

go to General Tab
uncheck Automatically run Windows Live Messenger when i log on to Windows
