When I turn on the computer it just looks like my screen is busted. Would I have to be able to see things on my screen on the laptop in order to hook it to a flat panel monitor?

I it does have the same port hookup on my laptop. I hooked it up to my laptop and turned it on and thought that it would recognize by plug and play but it didn't. I'm thinking I probably need to be able to see my laptop screen in order to switch it to a different one. Does anybody know for sure? Thanks for the answers.

If your laptop has a VGA port, then all you need is a cable. If it does not have a VGA port, then you can't.

If you plug the monitor into the VGA port on the back or side and power up from a cold boot then the laptop should see the monitor.

If it does not, then a lot of laptops have a hot key for switching the display. IBM/Lenovo it is Fn+F7, HP is Fn+F4. You probably have some sort of symbol on the F keys. You should be able to switch displays at any point as the computer boots, but you may have to wait until it has booted up fully into Windows.

Check the ports on your laptop, there may be one that looks the same as what the monitor connects to. After connecting, depending on your laptop, there may be a button, or combo of buttons to press to send the video signal to the monitor. Also, if it has an s-video port, try hooking it up to a tv, it looks great!
