restart in DOS mode. Press F8 before the Windows logo shows up to be presented with an options menu on how you wnat to start the computer. At the C:\ prompt, type This will erase EVERYTHING, including the operating system(Windows XP or whatever). Before you do that, though, make sure you have a recovery disc from your PC manufacturer that includes the operating system.

Try fix-it Utilities 7 they have it at walmart for 30 bucks, but it's an all in one type program. It clears viruses, useless files, and spyware from the computer. Also, check to see if your computer has an anti virus program built in. You should be able to do it from there.

You need to overwrite the files if you want to be positive the files can not be recovered.

This is often recommended when you are trying to get rid of a spyware /virus infection or before you sell your computer to eliminate the chance that any personal information can be recovered.

DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction.

Wipe Methods

Canadian RCMP TSSIT OPS-II Standard Wipe YES
American DoD 5220-22.M Standard Wipe YES

Another method often used that does not overwrite the files and some files may be recovered afterward is to format the hard drive.

Format and Reinstall Windows

Optional: When you format enter "fdisk /mbr" to format the master boot record.

click on start -->run

type in cmd and hit enter
type in the following: format c: /s

then hit enter.

OR better yet, take a big, powerful magnet and rub it over the hard drive several times. That'll make the files un-recoverable.
