this is very difficult, especially when you don't specify what kind of fish they are? But generally, if they are a member of the carp family (KOI, Goldfish, Fancy Goldfish, Sarasas etc) then you can only tell once they have become sexually mature. The females will become fatter around their bottom end, often looking slightly lopsided, some fancy fish that are white will get darker around their belly. The males will sometimes have little white spots around their gills (sometimes mistaken for white spot, but instead are breeding tubercules), also the male will have rougher sandpaper like scales when the season begins.
The easiest way to tell is watch behaviour. The males will be the ones chasing everything, sometimes to the point where it looks like abuse! The females will appear listless and knackered and take every chance when not being chased to have a rest, sometimes sitting on the bottom not completely upright.

some types of fish have differences like brighter colours in males, some have bigger tails, etc

the only way you will be able to get any prooper advice is if we know what type o fish it is.

if i was you tho i would see your local aquarian shop/specialist and ask them face to face to help you and thwey will most likely show you the differences in the type of fish

remember tho that some fish are the same regardless of whether they are male or female

What kind of fish? You have to use different characteristics for different species.

Some of the more common ones that are asked about:

goldfish: http://www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk/goldfish/info/sexing-fs.htm
bettas: http://www.flippersandfins.net/faq.htm#malefemale

Other types - if you look through the list of names on the right, click on any you want to know and look at the box at the bottom of the page - it will tell you how to tell the genders apart (if they can be separated - not all species can be!): http://www.fishlore.com/

put a mirror on the side of your aquarium ,,. male fish most of the time do not tolerate one more male fish of the same breed in their territory + will try to chase it away ,,.. female fish on the other hand will very seldom display such a behavior ,.-- they are much more docile ...

If you are talking about guppies then simply the males are much more colourful than females,
Platies- males have a more of a pointy anal fin and female have a larger anal fin this is the same for Mollies.
Swordtails- Mails have the sword- females do not - maybe a little one!!

Depends on the fish, mostly the females are least colorful and the males are more colorful.

it depends on what type of fish u have, most of the time u can tell by the coloration. males are more colorfull than females, but like i said it depends on the species of fish. hope that helped.
