There are 22 fish in my pond. They are mostly about 2 - 3 inches long, 4 or 5 are about 4 inches long. including the 2 new ones. They have quite a large pond to swim in and seem very sociable, swimming round in a large group or 2 or 3 smaller groups.

Its quite possible that one of them is full of eggs and releasing hormones into the pond which will drive all the males mad and (as I'v observed in my pond), pretty much chase anything. You haven't said what kind of fish you have, which isn't really important as all carp and goldfish are the same family and will breed with eac other, but if you 'd like try for baby fish then make sure there is plenty of underwater weed for them to spawn in. I f you have this then you may see the males chasing the female into the weed where she will lay her eggs and he will lay milt (sperm sort of!) on top at the same time. This is quite a frantic activity and you'll know when its happening. After that its best to put the weed with the (sticky) eggs on it into a separate pond or area where the parents and other fish cant eat them, which they will given the first chance.. Any more advice needed, please let me know. I currently have a seperte pond with about 5-600 babies in it. God knows what the hell I'll do with them all!

Probably a combination of two things - the older fish are checking the new ones out so they establish some sort of hierarchy of who's dominant (this will settle down in a few days) and there may be a female with eggs among them (will end once the eggs are laid).

The new fish are not welcome and the other fish are frantically trying to come up with excuses as to why they didnt attend the new fishes house warming party without hurting their feelings.
