it could be a sign of a mental disease called bipolar disorder. This disease is commonly called "manic depression". Overspending is a sign that the person is in a mania phase, with too much energy. I have multiple relatives with this condition.

In a word "no". But it can be labelled an addiction if a person is unable to control it or admit there is a problem when they hit serious financial trouble because of it.

We live in a society that exists on consumption. People shop for a lot of reasons. They are suceptible to commercial hype, they are bored, they just like having "stuff". Sometime people will buy themselves something if they are feeling "down" and it gives them a lift.

When it becomes a serious threat to their financial security then they have to examine their reasons.

Many people shop to try and fill a void in their lives. For the same reason some people over eat.

Some people have an over developed sense of "entitlement". Some shop out of loneliness, others for the rush of it, still others to fill some inner need. Some seek greater self-esteem, others use it to battle depression. Some people shop because they didnt have much as kids and feel they "missed out on the good stuff". Some people shop for "gifts" for other people, in order to win friends.

Some people feel gift giving is showing love - checkbook love is what I call it. Or they give gifts to others to make themselves feel better about how feelings of guilt they might have in relationships.

There are tons of reasons why people shop. It isnt a sign of mental illness or bi-polar disorder, (have you noticed EVERYTHING is bi-polar these days?) but it can be a sign that something is out of kilter in their lives, and it can become an addiction.

People who genuinely have Bi-Polar may shop during a manic stage, my friends father used to buy businesses when he was manic that he had no expertise to manage.

It could be a sign of bipolar disorder. BUT it could also just be someone who likes to over spend. Does this person spend tons of money randomly? Or all the time? If it's random it could be bipolar...
