Mine was a 1986 Suzuki Katana 600. First bike I owned , wrecked and rebuilt. I believe it was a great starter bike.

I had the means, so I bought a new SV650S from the dealer after taking an MSF course and FULL gear. I had it three years, dropped it twice, and finally totaled it into the back of a two-foot driver (left foot always resting on the brake pedal) that brake checked me.

The bike was great for the whole time I owned it, and even after the crash wasn't that bad off. I have it in my mind that someone bought her on a salvage title, replaced the radiator and fairings, and turned her into a racebike.

You only get one first bike, and though I really enjoyed the SV I would have bought one used if I had it to do over again.

I learned how to ride on my dad's CBR1000F. But, my dad made sure that I was comfortable riding my dirtbike, a YZ125, first. I also took the rider education course.

My dad wanted me to be comfortable on my dirtbike first, that way I would know how to shift, how to react to the back end sliding/fish-tailing, and, heaven forbid, how to take a fall. When he thought I had mastered my dirtbike then he put me on his street bike, which is a 1000cc bike. Yes, it was a huge transition but I felt like I was able to do fine on it. I am more comfortable riding that bike than people I know that only have 500cc and 600cc bikes. Some of my dirtbike skills have come in handy while I'm riding on the street. Skills that can't be learned in the rider education course.

But, for a first bike, it all depends on what YOU are comfortable with. If you aren't comfortable on a 600cc bike then go with something smaller. Find something that's easy for you to handle (in motion and in a parking lot). Also, you may want to get something used, that way you won't be torn up if you were to drop or wreck the bike.

The very first one I owned was a Hodaka of unknown vintage. It never ran. It was a trade junk for junk deal before I got interested in riding.
The first one I bought to ride (and learned on) was a 1974 Honda CL360. High side pipes, kick + electric start. Go anywhere bike. It didn't know the difference between dirt roads and Interstates.

My first bike was a Lambretta scooter. A scooter makes a good first bike, if you don't mind having a scooter. 8^)

But most of us older riders, our first bike was years ago but if you're starting today you have to pick from what's available now.

In the old days your first bike was usually smaller, 250cc to 500cc, and then you'd move up to something bigger when you got good at it.. These days there aren't a lot of bikes that size.

82' Suzuki GS 650 G. I drove it everywhere and put 80,000 miles on it before moving on to a 88' Katana 600.

It was a 1963 BSA Super Rocket A-10. Fairly tame 650 cc machine by today's standards, but it was beautiful, sounded great, you know that British accent, and fast enough to get me from downtown Atlanta to Daytona beach (400 miles) in 4 and a half hours.
