I've seen all these programs on TV about whole ships of people coming down with something while on a cruise or about going to stay in 4 star hotels in New York and finding that they were bitten by bed bugs in their rooms. I was trying to plan a summer trip with my girl friends and a cruise or trip to New York were our top picks. has anyone ever had an experience with either of these things?

I wouldn't worry about it, just go with a well known company and take a bottle of anti bacterial handwash and throw a dozen survival bars of food in the bottom of your suitcase (like the cereal bars except these are really high calorie) Then if you get stuck in your room from a quarantine or there's a problem with the food you will have something to live on. Just keep good hygiene.
As for hotels, your best bet is to look at sites with reviews like tripadvisor, but really it's all down to luck since the whole place could change by the time you arrive.

I'm sorry that I might not have answered your question properly but I have stayed in many hotels and been on cruises and survived though lol

No....I'm aware of the problems....but I inspect the beds when I check-in, but after that I do normal things to protect myself.

I'm not going to stop traveling....I love it too much.
