How long should the string connecting the sling to the arm be?
How heavy should the weight be, to hurl the projectile far?
How should I construct the mechanism in the frame that lets the sling be held down so I can load it up, then easily let it fly?

Direct answers or links to a site that has these answers with be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry, it's a small trebuchet. Nothing huge or siege-machine size.

well, you don't say what size your making. so It's not easy to answer you. as for the line, with the trebouchet in the down and locked position, you want enough line to put the load carrying section of the line about even with the pivot or "axle".
weight depends on size of unit and how far you want to throw plus how strong you make the unit. Experiment with the weights to get the best throw for your machine.
The release is specialized and hard to describe, but dangerously important. AND MUST HAVE A SAFETY PIN. I have found example online under "Trebouchet" And I know there are several people who manufacture the releases if you can't.
Good luck
