Here is what I believe you have: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:1935_Indian_Head_Buffalo_Nickel.jpg
The price will vary on the condition, and also where it was minted. The following are the value of the coin at this time:
If it was minted in Denver (look for a D at bottom of front side) it can be worth anything from 16-75 dollars, from worst to average condition. Thats a minimum of $16!
If it was minted in San Francisco (Look for a S at bottom of front side) it can be worth from 20-95 dollars, from worst to average condition. Thats a minimum of $20.
If it does not have any words at the bottom, it is only worth 5-8 dollars, from worst to average. Thats a minimum of $5.
So, depending on the condition and where the coin was minted, it can be worth a bit of money. I suggest you keep it, and whenever you have the time, bring it somewhere for appraisal, like a coin store.
Of course, if you don't want it, I'll take it. =)

A 1917 Buffalo nickel is worth $2.50 grade good to $7.00 in Grade very fine. The mint mark if any is on the Buffalo side below the words five cents. The 1917-D is worth $15 to $60 in the same grades and the 1917-S is worth $17 to $80. The coin needs to be graded by a coin dealer. The values given are about what a dealer would pay.

Go to the library and check the "Redbook" (sorry I can't remember the actual name). A librarian could probably help you find it. It will give you some criteria to grade the coin and an approximate value.
