The RIAA contacts your internet service provider and obtains your contact information. Then they send you a pre-litigation settlement offer. If you refuse, they file a lawsuit.

As far as I know they only go after people who are facilitating downloads by others. Either by supplying the items or the information to achieve it. I don't think the government could ever go after all the people just downloading for their own use. They can't even do much more than scratch the surface on the Child Porn criminals. And clearly that is much more important than someones music or movie.

Just boycott disk industry products. People who share files are big customers. If they just decide not to buy any more until they are not prosecuted any more, major company will stop soon persecute them.

Buy and share free music (just like free software: this does not necessary mean free of charge).

Is your favourite artist in a major ? Write and tell him or her to leave these screws.
