By no stretch of the imagination is Bush the best person to be President. We have had some good modern Presidents that history will remember well, but I can't say I am sure the they were the best possible guys for the job.
Taking the money out of politics (if that is humanly possible) by publicly financed campaigns might help. Currently, you have to raise lots of money to be President which I think turns lots of people off.
Cutting back on the politics of personal destruction would probably also inspire better candidates. You pretty much as setting your family to be dragged through the mud and subject to intense scrutiny. Does it really matter what the candidates spouses do with their hair?
We'd also have to welcome actual honest to goodness debate. We'd have to accept that we can't lower taxes and the same or increased levels of spending. The public is not very receptive to messages that it doesn't want to hear.

No, the smartest person around is Carl Rove because is was able to get a moron like Bush elected. The second smartest person is Dick Cheney because he is in fact the real president but gets the moron to take all the blame for his mistakes.
How to make it better? First, stop this incessant encroaching on our liberties and put an end to this notion that we need to lock up people for victimless crimes. After all, who owns our bodies? The current answer is: the state. Second, let's institute a proportional representation scheme so that people actually take an interest in their government and can vote their hopes and dreams. In our current system, most people vote AGAINST someone. Hell of a way to run a democracy.

Absolutely NOT! Bush is the worst president I highly believe the world has ever seen. Half the time, we hear him on the news spending time on his stupid ranch in Texas, taking a so-called "vacation" or checking out Camp David and visiting other prime ministers and presidents of other countries like Russia that are not necessary right now.
Reagan, & Kennedy, (i know it's not in order) i believe were the best modern presidents we were fortunate to have. Reagan made Iran a better country until Carter came to screw it up with the Revoulution of 1978 and throwing out the Shah of Iran, which then the Shah got killed and Iran's been in turmoil ever since. Now Iran has Ahmadinejad; the horrible president who is planning to wipe Israel off the map and who also denies the Holocaust ever existed. Kennedy took care of The Missile Crisis of Cuba and the Bay of Pigs event in the 1960's.
To make it better now and for the future, we need Barack Obama who is just not focused on increasing health insurance for the elderly but also making a better effort than Bush to put an end to the horrible atrocities that have been taking place in Darfur.

I've had this thought for the last several presidential elections. I phrase it a little differently: "Out of 300M people in this country, is this the best we can dredge up for the Oval Office?"
I look at the top six contenders for '08, and I can't help shaking my head:
o A one-term senator?
o A one-term governor?
o A frivolous lawsuit attourney?
o An adulterous mayor from NYC?
o A person so devoid of morals that he can have an affair and leave an invalid wife to fend for herself?
o A liberal nutjob whose husband was one of the biggest, most scandalous embarrassments to evey occupy the oval office?
Those are the favorites... guess I'll have to dig deeper to find someone I'll be willing to vote for. Brownback, maybe? Ron Paul? Dunno just yet.

The only thing I can say is that I'm comforted by the fact that the universally acclaimed worst President in US History (Buchanan) was followed immediately by the universally acclaimed best President in US History (Lincoln). We really need a Lincoln right now cause W is certainly challenging Buchanan's special spot.

Considering the size of the country, no, I don't think any
particular President, past, certainly present and future
is the "best possible."
On the other hand, I'd love to have met the guy that
was a better President than Lincoln.
More so now than then, we get stuck with someone who
is electable, not someone who is good.
How scary is it that Bush was electable THE SECOND TIME
AROUND?!
