No---an Automatic car starts in first gear no matter what gear you place the shift lever in---only thing it won't do is upshift past the gear you've selected. If you want to accelerate faster, try a "brake stand" which holds the car until your engine revs up to a higher RPM where it makes more power and then let off the brake---usually around 2000 rpm's. Don't do it too often as it really heats up the trans fluid and could fry the trans.

most automatic transmissions have sensors that tell them when to change effectively as the driving condition varies.[mostly depends on how heavy your foot is on the accelerator]. usually, if you put your foot down, the gears won't change until you're close to the redline and can actually enter the redline in some extreme cases, this will give you the ultimate 0-60 for the car. also this may depend on the type of automatic [some do have overdrive function while some have kickdown sensors that are activated when the accelerator is pressed to the floor]. the likelihood is that the transmission knows better than you when it comes to the most efficient time to change whether yopu're driving is aggressive or not. but take notice that frequent and unnecessary flooring of the gas pedal often shortens the lifespan of the transmission. achieving optimum performance by changing manually would be easier with m/t rather than a/t. from my driving experience, [i drive a benz and a honda and both are automatic] it would change faster if you started out in D.

Yes. But that is only because you are revving the car higher in each gear. You can also over rev the car if you don't shift it before it gets close to the redline. But if the computer is telling it to shift at say 4000 rpms and won't shift it later but you put it in 2nd and rev it to5 or 6000 rpms then yes you'll accelerate harder and faster.
An Automatic transmission is designed to shift the car either based on the amount of vaccume it senses or by when the computer tells it to shift.

2nd then 3rd wtf?>?
you are going to destroy your engine and trans you young buck. cars that are equipped with semi-auto drivetrains (namely Cadillac & BMW) are Verrrrrry quick in 3rd gear. That horsepower comes alive in 3rd on GM cars. No need to shift to 2nd. there are too many dynamics involved with 2nd gear (don't drive too fast, keep it under "so n so", etc). If you have a Caddy or BMW, stay in 3rd and you will smoke half the cars on the road guaranteed!!

no. its how you step on the gas and the transmission is already programmed to shift at the points were it will give the most hp. and fuel economy.
