I don't know of any store getting them in yet. Most likely it will be at least a week prior to release that they receive them - depending on the stores delivery schedule.
The lines are always ridiculous! I know that the midnight parties at B&N are normally pretty fun - chatting with your local Potter fans passes the time quickly. Plus I'm just the sort who loves spending hours in a bookstore. ;-) For HBP our B&N had set up stations for having your photo taken, making "potions" (pixie stick dust and kool-aid), and other arts and crafts type activities. Sort of reminded me of an elementary school carnival - only without the cake walk. ;-)
Last book release B&N didn't bother putting name slips in the reserved copies, they just left them in the boxes behind the counter. When you arrived at the store there was a table set up for those who had reserved the book and you went to check in and get a wristband to claim your book. It seemed to work very well. Those without pre-orders had to wait until all the pre-orders had gone through and checked out, then they were able to purchase their copies.
I strongly suggest pre-ordering!! You still can pre-order and pre-order doesn't mean you have to pre-pay! You can pay in advance if you want to, but you don't have to. It gets you through the lines faster than not having a reserved copy. If you are worried about not being able to attend a midnight release and the book selling out (which I doubt it will) then go ahead and pre-order. You'll be able to pick the book up at your convenience during regular business hours.

The lines will probably be INSANE, but they probably won't run out of books. If they do run out (not likely), they'll take your order and you can either pick up the book when it comes in or have it shipped to your house.
As for what your local B&N is going to do for the midnight release, you should just call the store and ask. They would have to work with the mall about being open outside normal hours, so they might not be doing anything at all, unless they have their own outside entrance. Call the store and ask; they should be able to tell you what they're doing.

The lines are going to be insane. A friend of mine works at a Borders, and he says that for their midnight release, the store is expecting at *Least* a thousand people to show up. He also said that although the stores will be getting the books delivered earlier that day, that they are Not allowed to open the boxes until midnight, so they can't even begin to put name tag slips in the books until then (for the peeps who reserved them).
You should be able to call that specific store, to find out what they are doing for the release night.

Pre-order the book. They'll have to save a copy for you and have it set aside until you can get it.
