Sip tea and eat cucumber sandwiches, as *<3 khia <3* says? I figure MOST of y'all gulp tea and eat fish&chips (and yes, I know your chips aren't our chips).
And *what* "TV is very stereotypical"? BBC America? The British stuff that shows up on PBS? Whaaaat?
Real_gold_fears_no_fire is right, and I thank her for pointing out what I hadn't realized before: Physical beauty is not nearly as important for being on UK TV as it is for US TV. Not an absolute requirement here, just more frequent. (Memorable line from Joey on "Friends," instructing a class of wannabe soap actors: "And you all need to get a LOT better looking." The soaps are indeed the apotheosis of this; no matter which gender or what age, every single soap actor I've ever seen is absolutely GORGEOUS!)
I spent about a week in York some years ago--I went for the Mystery Plays--and I don't remember having any of my expectations shattered. (I didn't really expect to like English beer better than American, tho I did have hopes. I liked my Scotch egg and the curry about as well as I thought I would.) But then, I'd not only seen y'all portrayed on TV but also read English mysteries for decades.
The single thing that surprised me is that UK banks charge you for making your DEPOSITS. Did you know that US banks don't?

I am biased because I lived in England. Yes, like many, I watch English comedies and dramas.
I think you are mostly polite. Heck, even your skinheads were more polite than the ones here or say in France, German, or Belgium.
I think that you can be a bit tough about some things. You are usually frugal with money.
You can be very self effacing.
You have silly sense of humor.
You are not as open as Americans (but who is?)
Have a good day.

I think people are basically the same where ever you go. There are some who are wonderful some who are so so... then there are those that we wish the earth would open up and swallow them.
I was in England the summer of 1968. The English people I met were very nice to us. I only heard one person make a disaparging remark about Americans in general.

As far as I know only gangsters say yo. Not even most Americans do...but who am I to get nit-picky huh?
I think in all honesty, most people ignore the English because we are too alike. There really is no stereotype aside from the really cool accent. Where I live, people usually target people
who look completely different form themselves.
Most Americans stereotype: Asian as smart. black as cooler than the rest of us. Middle-east as scary.
But English LOOK the exact same. If anything, Americans stereotype English as Americans living in a different country.
Oh! now I think of it, we did notice ONE thing different. Your tv channels have somewhat regular people. American TV hires only people above average height who are pretty enough to be models. But your TV channels have common people! Its so amazing to watch!

I think most people will not have very well fleshed out ideas about people from other countries unless they actually visit. Depending on TV is certainly not a good way to for an opinion. :)
I lived in England for a while as a child, and have studied it in History. I think the U.K. is great, an interesting place with amazing history and tremendous strength of character. You also produce some of the funniest people on Earth.

Well, we know what the world thinks of US--fat, greedy, spoiled, loud & rude.....some people are, some aren't.
So British people, as stereotyped...
Have bad teeth, like to cross dress (men, anyway), have all been buggered if they attended private school, are poor lovers, have a strange sense of humor, and no cuisine at all, to speak of.
And the younger generation can't find jobs and hang around inventing bizarre music trends instead.
Don't be offended--I know these aren't true!!

I think you are a lot like us except you do not stand up for your freedoms and have allowed your country to become a big nanny state. Your government take the extreme taxes from needs like gasoline and uses the money to buy ever-more cameras to spy on you.
People try to do that here in the U.S. too, but we resist them severely, and any socialist victory they manage to get is hard-won and extremely costly.
