Go to http://apple.com and check the iPod section. There are several possible reasons for your problem.

1. The boom box charger may not give the battery enough kick to get it to accept a full charge. Try leaving it connected to the factory charger over night.
2. There is a battery memory section in the iPod's built in ROM. (If I remember correctly) The Apple.com website should explain how to reset it.
3. The battery may have just died. They have a finite life and you may have reached your battery's by leaving it sitting idle for so long a time. Unfortunately, the battery is NOT user replaceable. It needs to be replaced by an iPod service person.
