No, it is a province of China and is still considered a part of China as prior to Mao it was.
However, China is smart enough to not do it with military, but rather economically.
The reasons are several fold. First, even if the west doesn't get involved in an invasion, it would have far reaching economic and political affects and would be devastating for China. Second, if the west gets involved, there is no way on earth China could take on the west and would lose that war. The devastation would be catastrophic not only for China, but possibly the world as a whole if it becomes nuclear.
Eventually China and Taiwan will be reunited for economic reasons. As China's economy becomes stronger, Taiwan will see them as an ally instead of a adversary and will be reunited under the same concept as Hong Kong, one country, two governments, exactly what China has been stating for over a decade.
Finally, for the most part, Taiwan has normal trade, exchanges and tourism between each other. Once a year or so they dust off their sabers and rattle them at each other, then put them away and go back to normal relations. I suspect that is done more to appease the haters in both the west and with each other.
I hope this puts to rest what you are spoon fed in the press here. If I wasn't right, then 50 years ago China would have invaded, or at the very least, normal relations would not be going on now.

No, in fact once they close the military technology gap and are confident that the USA can't stop them, they will take it back.
They want to assimilate the economy of Taiwan back into China. It's about money, and nothing else.

yes ....if the dems win the white house god help us all...china will take over the island .........and they will say there is no border beween the U.S. and mexico....I'm sure they will have new name for the country
