In-sink-erator is the best brand I know of. All disposers are bulky and a little heavy. Remember, you will be lifting it up in a small space and attaching it at the same time. They come in different horsepowers so the price goes up with an increase in HP. So does efficiency.

You should be able to find a good inexpensive one at the home center. They are very easy to install and most come with instructions. Just make sure you get everything when your there. I would replace the piping when you do it. You have to take everything off anyway and I makes the job a little cleaner.
You will need:
Plumbers putty - this is what keep the water in the sink. Do not use DAP or silicone.
New piping - It comes in a kit for one or two hole sinks
Tools - Channel locks, screw drivers, hacksaw (for cutting the piping), wrench set (some have hex head bolts)
Electrical lock nuts and electrical tape.
Don't forget the power cord - the disposal will not have one in the box. You can use the old one but might as well replace it. Don't worry about the power; it's 3 wires, hot (black), neutral (white) and ground (green). Make sure you ask the home center guy about the wiring of the cord before you leave.

Insinkerator! We bought an awesome one that was fairly inexpensive at Lowes. It took about 20 minutes to install and it works like a charm! My husband is a manager for Lowes, and wouldn't buy any other brand so it must have a good reputation!

I'd avoid Sears brand - ours didn't last very long. Look for one with a good guarantee - I think our current one has a 5 year warranty. Check out this site: http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/shows_detp/episode/0,2046,DIY_19138_34687,00.html for instructions on how to install it. You may need a bit of help holding it in place as the bottom section is a bit heavy. The biggest problem we had putting ours in was we had the wrong connectors to the other waste line and had to go back to the hardware store.

These are all really good answers but if you are starting from all new and not replacing an exsisting one do not forget you will have to have electical to hook it up to also and to do this correctly you should have the elecrical supply so it can easily be shut off or disconnected for future repairs.

Home centers are good places to buy, good prices and selection, I've always had good luck with the In-Sink-Erator brand.
