I tried to watch the movie but it came on at like 2 am and I was tired but told myself I would try and watch the movie. Maybe it was sleep deprivation but the whole movie I was just like wtf is going on. I was a little confused because nothing was ever really explained unless I doze off a little bit and missed a major point. Overall my question is how were the people dying and where did the website come from? Ian Somerhalder was the only reason I continued watching lol.

These students at the school where the movies takes place were experimenting with high frequencies and in the process discovered a frequency that allowed the dead to pass through into our world. The students initially were able to prevent the frequency from expanding but the character who killed himself at the beginning of the movie hacked into it and let it loose. The website was the frequency trying to spread.

See, when Mattie and Dexter were talking to Zieglar, he explained that this whole mess originaly started as a telecom project. They were discovering frequencies that didn't exist when, long story short, these things came through. They weren't ghosts or malevolent souls and this wasn't a computer virus. This was all hell breaking loose. Literally.

The souls of hell itself were coming through on this recently discovered frequency. And the computer virus wasn't a new virus to stop the first one, but instead to make the mainframe stop broadcasting on that frequency and allowing the souls to come through.

Unfortunately, the movie did not just slap people in the face with this fact, so most people didn't actually understand it.
